Twitter has become the battleground for armchair activists and supporters since the past few days. Just one tweet by Rihanna seems to have shaken the government to its core. In response, it’s reaching out to every Indian celebrity who’s in the good books of the ruling party. Every such celebrity seems to be backing backwards to counter a tweet by Rihanna and opening the huge box of hypocrisy in the process.
The latest ones to do so are Akshay Kumar and Saina Nehwal. It looks like while following orders they have outed government’s planning behind it. The two tweets made by these two are the exact copy of each other. Now in hindsight, those tweets made by Sachin, Kohli, Raina and other celebrities seem to be done on the government’s order as well.
The Ministry of external affairs said, “The temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments, especially when resorted to by celebrities and others, is neither accurate no responsible”. It is ironic that the government did the same that it condemns others for. Hours after Rihanna’s tweet, Social media was awash with celebrities who have good ties with the ruling party tweeting in support of the government.
These stunts not only diminish the credibility of the government but also makes us look authoritarian in front of the whole world. While right-winger supporters love to say that they don’t care about what the world says, the whole circus that has followed after just one tweet says otherwise.
