IPL 2024: Indian media hypes up regulation catch by MS Dhoni like nothing else

Published:

MS Dhoni, the former CSK captain who recently handed over his captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad is a media house darling. Whatever he does inside and out of the stadium makes news given his popularity in the country.

His popularity and craze often pushes media houses to hype him and his usual actions to incredible lengths. One such incident took place when CSK faced GT in the 7th match of the IPL 2024 on March 26th. The over 8th was being bowled by Kiwi allrounder Daryl Mitchell when GT batter Vijay Shanker knicked one outside off. The ball was sailing through the air on Dhoni’s right side when the 42-year-old made a brilliant leap and grabbed it out of the air.

It was a full-stretch catch that any cricket player playing at the highest level would be expected to make. But since it was Dhoni, the Indian media houses began doing the same that they often do with players who are more popular.

The Indian Express wrote, that Dhoni brought the roof off Chepauk with sensational diving catch. It went a step further and highlighted Dhoni’s reach which was 2.27 meters while taking the catch.

Any player/ keeper taking a full diving catch would stretch that much, even more, if they’re taller. Also, the adjective ‘sensational’ would turn to ‘great’ if the same catch was taken by any other keeper.

Wisden, another media house operating from England as well as India called it a ‘stunner’. They also challenged the laws of physics when defining Dhoni’s catch.

The only jaws that dropped were of other wicket-keepers who would be cringing at the adjectives used for Dhoni’s catch. India TV could have used this for Ajinkya Rahan’s catch a few overs after this one and that would have been more appropriate.

India Today’s stunner looks much more normal among all these but it is still overdoing what essentially was a regulation catch by the World Cup winner.

The actual ‘jaw dropping’ catch was taken by Ajinkya Rahane

The actual ‘stunner’, ‘jaw dropping’ and ‘age defying’ catch came in the 12th over when Ajinkya Rahane ran towards the mid wicket, made a timely dive and grabbed onto the ball to dismiss David Miller all in a couple of seconds.
