Is This the Most Open and Entertaining IPL?
There have been 12 iterations of the IPL in the past and in those IPLs, Mumbai Indians have won 4 times and Chennai Super Kings 3 times. Usually, MI have been winning for the past 4 odd years with CSK, SRH and KKR fighting for the trophy in even years. IPLs of the past have been a fairly consistent affair in terms of top and bottom teams. Usually, the teams like MI, CSK, SRH and KKR held top spots and the others struggled at the bottom. This is, however, a very different season in that regard. The points table seems to have been flipped over for this year. The historically weaker teams like RR, KXIP, DC and RCB sit at the top half of the table while the team that have won IPL trophies in the past are found in the lower half.
IPL Centipede is Complete
IPL at this point has formed a centipede devouring its own body with the teams. Every team has beaten one team and has lost to another team at this point. CSK have beaten MI, MI have beaten KKR, KKR have beaten RR, RR have beaten KXIP, KXIP have beaten SRH, SRH have beaten DC and finally DC have beaten CSK to complete the centipede. No team has so far has posed a sure shot chance at the semifinal spot. Every team has shown its strength and has been found out by another team at some point of the IPL. A lack of crowd has eliminated the advantage of a home crowd that teams like CSK and MI enjoyed in their home stadiums as well as in opponent’s den.
If the points table is anything to go by this years IPL looks like the most open it has been in history. It looks like any team has a shot at this year’s coveted trophy. Teams that used to steamroll the opponents are not as strong anymore and teams that used to lurk in the bottom half are rising to the challenge. In just 13 games there have been 2 SuperOvers and many games have gone right down to the wire. There has also been a rise in the big team totals. RR and KXIP match saw the biggest total being chased down in the history of the IPL. In terms of entertaining this IPL has been one of the best in recent memory. Every team looks like could defeat another team on their day and similarly could get beaten by any team.
With just 1/3 of the IPL complete, it is shaping up to be a very exciting affair and we cannot wait to see what the rest of it has to offer.
