‘Khoon choos rahe hain bachchon ka’ – Gurgaon CEO’s encounter with Rs 2000 per month salaried intern


India is growing at an unprecedented rate today. With the biggest human resource in the world, India is set to provide almost 25% of the global workforce over the next 10 years. This provides an immense opportunity for business owners to make good money. Companies like Infosys, TCS, Cognizant, and Wipro are some of the biggest service providers from India that are using the humungous workforce for their own benefits.

Today, a huge number of India‘s workforce is being exploited with long working hours, substandard pay, lack of job security and whatnot. All these issues when cited by young professionals are swept under the carpet saying how normal it is in a competitive market and they need to skill up. However, they forget to realise that this is the very youth on whose shoulders the country stands on. The country needs to take care of their youth so that they will take care of the country in the future. 

A businessman’s encounter with India’s sad reality

In recent years, discussions surrounding labour rights and fair wages have gained significant traction in India, spurred by instances of exploitation and inadequate compensation faced by workers across various sectors. The recent incident involving Rajesh Sawhney’s criticism of a 5-star hotel in Gurgaon highlights the pressing need for comprehensive labour reform to address wage disparities and combat exploitation.

Sawhney’s tweet, shedding light on the meagre stipend of ₹2,000 per month paid to an intern at a prestigious hotel Le Meridian, sparked outrage and prompted a larger conversation about the plight of workers in the country. The incident underscores a systemic issue wherein many workers, particularly those in entry-level positions or informal sectors, are grossly underpaid and subjected to exploitative working conditions.

India’s labour laws, although designed to protect workers’ rights, often fall short in ensuring fair wages and dignified working conditions for all. Widespread violations of labour standards, including sub-minimum wages, long working hours without adequate compensation, and lack of social security benefits, contribute to the perpetuation of poverty and inequality among workers.

India’s minimum wage laws need urgent attention

One of the key areas requiring urgent attention is the revision of India’s minimum wage laws to ensure that all workers receive remuneration that is sufficient to meet their basic needs and maintain a decent standard of living. Additionally, efforts must be made to enforce compliance with labour regulations, holding employers accountable for wage theft and exploitation.

Furthermore, the informal sector, which comprises a significant portion of India’s workforce, remains largely unprotected by existing labour laws, leaving workers vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. Implementing measures to formalize informal employment arrangements and extend legal protections to all workers, regardless of their employment status, is crucial in safeguarding their rights and well-being.

THIS is the need of the hour

Beyond wage reform, there is a need for comprehensive labour policies that address issues such as working hours, occupational safety and health standards, and access to social security benefits. By prioritizing the welfare of workers and promoting inclusive economic growth, India can create a more equitable and sustainable society.

In light of recent incidents and growing awareness of labour rights violations, there is an opportunity for policymakers, employers, and civil society to come together to enact meaningful labour reform. No one wants to get into this as it requires a lot of work and that is something the government wants to do the least of; that is our sad reality. 

Hopefully, the workers rise up and demand something to be done about the exploitative labour laws. Until then the sad grind would continue.
