With the launch of Lal Singh Chaddha poster, Aamir khan has given us the first look of his upcoming movie. Given how big of a debacle the Thugs of Hindustan was, Aamir Khan needs it to be a big blockbuster. It might be the most important movie of his career. Its success would reposition him at the top and its failure would be the last straw in his time as the best Bollywood actor.
The movie itself is a remake of the legendary Forrest Gump that redefined Hollywood some 25 years ago. It got 6 Academy Awards and is seen as one of the best of all time. Remaking a movie like that has got to be a very tough task. Sure, most of the Indian audience might not have seen this movie but its popularity transcends just the movie industry. If people don’t know about Forrest Gump now, they sure will before the release of this movie.
Although in the face of it, the movie is about a person with autism, it has lots of political references. In Forrest Gump, the main character influenced a lot of historic events parallels of which would need to be made in Laal Singh Chaddha. The 1984 anti-Sikh riots would surely be shown as the main protagonist is a Sikh and the movie is set in the 80s. Lal Singh Chaddha’s story is heavily inspired by Forrest Gump but it would have to be in such a way that the Indian audience could connect with.
Avoid blatant copies like “Life was like a box of laddoos” and we’ll be fine
Remaking a movie like this is a very tough ask, as it should be. We don’t need this to be the next money-making trend in Bollywood. Remaking and remixing has already sucked the soul out of our music industry. Think about what would happen if we get movies like Jurassic Pyaar, Gone with the pind and Bhakt to the future each month until every hit Hollywood movie is remade! Just thinking about it gives me the chills.
Although Lal Singh Chaddha was slated to be released in December of 2020, with the Coronavirus outbreak it looks unlikely.
I want this movie to be great and if not I want it to fail spectacularly so no one attempts another remake.
