What is cervical cancer?

Cervical cancer is common cancer arising from the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina of the female reproductive system.

Cervical cancer usually develops over time, the healthy cells in the cervix go through certain changes in their DNA. Then the abnormal cells start to multiply and appear in the cervical tissue and spread more deeply into the cervix and surroundings.

Most cervical cancers are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) that’s passed through sexual contact.
We can reduce the risk of this cancer by having screening tests and getting a vaccine done that protects against HPV infection.

Symptoms include:

Pelvic pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding, pain during sexual intercourse, heavier and long-lasting periods.

Factors that can increase the risk of Cervical cancer:

1. Smoking tobacco
2. Early sexual activity
3. Untreated other sexually transmitted infections.
4. Consumption of miscarriage medicines without doctor consultations.
5. Unprotected sex with multiple sexual partners

Can it be cured?

Yes, it is curable when such symptoms-related issues are taken care of during the early stages.

Preventable measures:

1. Talk to your doctor about the HPV vaccination.
2. Always have protected sex to avoid sexually transmitted diseases and avoid multiple sexual partners.
3. Don’t smoke, as smoking increases the risk of cervical cancer if infected by the HPV.
4. Have routine pap tests done, as they can detect precancerous conditions of the cervix.
