Rishabh Pant is probably the only person who is having a wonderful pandemic. Well, apart from the world’s billionaires ofcourse!
There was a time not long ago when calls were made for Pant to be dropped from both tests as well as ODI citing his lack of maturity at the highest level. People said he was too immature to be playing in the Indian middle order. Since then he has gone on to become, probably, the most important player bar Kohli/ Rohit in all formats and is almost undroppable at the moment. Only Joe Root has made more international runs in 2021 than Rishabh Pant such has been his meteorically rise.
Given his incredible run of form in recent times, it has come as a surprise to no one that Rishabh Pant has been made the captain of Delhi Capitals in absence of Shreyas Iyer. Iyer who was out with a shoulder injury in the second ODI against England was DC’s captain for a couple of years now. Although Steve Smith is a more experienced captain in the Delhi side, the owner of the club must have taken Pant’s form and know-how of the Indian condition into account while considering his role in the franchise.
Pant issued this statement after being handed Captain’s role for Delhi Capitals.
“Delhi is where I grew up, and where my IPL journey began six years ago. To lead this team one day is a dream I’ve always harboured. And today, as that dream comes true, I feel humbled. I am truly grateful, especially to our team owners, who considered me capable enough for this role. With an amazing coaching staff and a plethora of accomplished seniors around me, I can’t wait to give my absolute best for Delhi Capitals.”
People were ready to remind Pant of the “temporary captain” jibe that he took at Tim Paine while touring Australia in 2019. Now that he is one himself, tables have certainly turned!
