Will RCB and CSK both fail to qualify for IPL Playoffs?

The Indian Premier League 2024 is at its business end. As teams push for the playoff slots, there are a myriad of permutations and combinations at play. A team’s qualification right now not only depends on its victory but also on the the results of other matches.

Two teams that are currently sitting with calculators are Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The MS Dhoni-led side had a strong start to their campaign as they won all of their first few home matches, showcasing supreme confidence on the path to playoffs. Their season however went awry due to injuries and player exit and now they find themselves with 14 points with a game in hand.

That game however is against the most unpredictable team in history, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The RCB have been a very interesting team in the IPL, in the fact that despite a hoard of big names in the team like Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Glenn Maxwell, Faf du Plessis and many more, they have never won the IPL.

RCB would certainly become a case study on how you could fail despite being the best in a lot of different areas. Going on a similar path as they have 16 more times, RCB are struggling to get into the playoff after performing poorly in the league stage this year as well. In 13 matches, the star-studded team could only muster 12 points and require a win in their last along with help from other teams to get into the IPL playoffs.

RCB vs CSK – An all important game

RCB and CSK play their last league stage match against each other on May 18th at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. To get into the playoffs, both teams have to win their last match. This suggests a fiery battle on Saturday when these two teams clash.

However, the host city could play spoilsport for both teams and get both of them out of the playoff race with its unpredictability. The factor that could derail CSK as well as RCB’s hopes of playoff qualification is the rain!

Bangalore has been lambasted with heat waves since the start of this year. The summer in the city broke decades-old records in the past couple of months with the temperature touching 40 degree Celsius in the afternoon.

Shortage of water in Bangalore, record sales of ACs, and delivery guys passed out by the side of the road were some of the major concerns that the city of Bangalore was fighting with, just a week ago. Today however the scenario has completely changed with the intervention of the rain gods at the right time.

Rain gods to decide RCB and CSK’s fate

Karnataka’s capital has been receiving rain almost every day for the last week as a result of which, the temperature has come down under 30. While this is great news for all Bangaloreans, CSK and RCB fans are a little concerned.

The weather forecast for the RCB vs CSK match scheduled for Saturday, May 18th shows over 80% chance of rain in Bangalore. This means that there is a high chance that RCB vs CSK match could be abandoned due to rain. If that happens, CSK will be stuck on 15 points whereas RCB could be on 13 points.

A 13-point finish right away gets RCB out of the playoffs while a 15-point finish for CSK means that they would have to pray for a loss for LSG who themselves are on 12 points with two matches left. Meanwhile, SRH who are with 14 points with two matches left to play would have to lose both of their matches for CSK to get into the playoffs.
